What is Soma – Understanding your New Medication

Posted by doc 8 April, 2009

If you go to the doctor for a muscle sprain or pain, you may very well walk out of the office with a prescription for a medication known as soma.  But you may be asking yourself what is soma.  Although it is not a new substance, this is a very good question to have on your mind.  By understanding the medications you take, you are better informed about what is going into your body as well as the risks that are associated with it.
The question “what is soma” is actually quite broad.  On a technical side, soma is a medication that is the name brand for a drug known as Carisoprodol.  It is a centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxant that is especially useful against certain types of pains.  Some doctors shy away from prescribing Soma to their patients as it does have a history that can be linked to dependency and abuse.  Because of this, many doctors in countries in the European Union and British Kingdom seek out alternative medications.  In the United States, though, Soma prescriptions are still widely popular.
Another answer to the question “what is soma” is how it refers to dosage and use.  Soma is taken orally in pill form with the most common adult dose being 350mg.  There is a low dose version as well, usually 250mg.  It is not recommended for children under the age of 12.  It is usually prescribed to be taken three times per day and sometimes another dose right before bed.  Side effects can include dizziness, irritability, agitation, upset stomach, and insomnia, among others.  There are also more severe side effects like a rapid heart rate and extreme dizziness as well as allergic reactions that can occur, although rarely.  If any of these serious things do occur, stop using the medication and seek immediate medical attention.
When you receive your prescription it should come with literature pertaining to its use and side effects.  It’s important to read these documents thoroughly and make sure you have a complete understanding of what it does and what you can expect from using it.  Soma is a prescription medication processed through the liver so it’s also important to limit the consumption of alcohol while taking the medication.  If you have any questions or concerns, be sure to address them with your doctor or licensed pharmacist before take Soma.  Hopefully, this provides some insight on your question, “what is soma”.
